10th Annual Bay-Friendly Garden Tours

April 2, 2013

Cagwin & Dorward is pleased to sponsor the 10th Annual Bay-Friendly Garden Tour in Alameda County on April 28, 2013 and Napa County on May 5, 2013.

Although the gardens vary in style, they are similar in technique. The practices used to create and maintain these gardens reduce waste and pollution, conserve natural resources, and create vibrant landscapes and gardens.

The tour is self-guided and registration requires purchase of a guidebook with garden descriptions, directions, and entrance tickets that can be shared.

Highlights from the 2012 Bay-Friendly Garden Tour

Porter & Sarah's Garden:

Porter and Sarah’s garden combines sweeping Bay views with a home and landscape designed for the dramatic setting. With an emphasis on sustainability, edible landscaping and wildlife habitat, the garden features the diverse plant choices the mild bay-side climate allows. It’s literally a “banana belt” since Porter and Sarah harvest ripe bananas from their grove.

2013 Bay-Freindly Garden Tour

When they bought this lot, it featured an old burned down house and was overgrown with about 30 invasive black acacia trees and ivy that had to be removed before they could put in a new garden. The lot’s steep hillside also required extensive terracing to prevent erosion and reduce rainwater runoff. Porter used bricks reclaimed from the old house for a patio, stairway, and raised bed edging. To provide for their irrigation needs, they installed a rain catchment system with a 3,000 gallon underground tank.

This spring Porter and Sarah will join other Bay Area gardeners featured on the 10th annual Bay-Friendly Garden Tour.
